Reference: Larrieu 2004
Cohort: Personnes Agées QUID
Risk Factor: Alcohol

Average Follow-up Time Detail
Investigators report 8 years of follow-up, but average follow-up is not reported.

Exposure Detail
Non-drinkers (<1 serving of wine per week)
Mild (at least two servings of wine per week but no more than 250 mL [2 standard glasses] per day)
Moderate (between 250 and 500 mL of wine [3 to 4 standard glasses] per day)
Heavy (more than 500 mL [5 standard glasses and up] per day)

At baseline, frequency of wine consumption was collected. "Subjects were classified as non drinkers if they did not drink any wine or no more than one drink per week; mild drinkers if they drank at least two drinks per week but no more than 250 mL (2 standard glasses) per day; moderate drinkers if they drank between 250 and 500 mL of wine (3 to 4 standard glasses) per day; and heavy drinkers if they drank more than 500 mL (5 standard glasses and up) per day."

Ethnicity Detail
Participants were "representative of community residents in Gironde and Dordogne, two areas in south-western France".

Age Detail
All participants were 65 and older. Investigators do not provide further detail on age distribution.

Screening and Diagnosis Detail
Screening Method:
DSM IIIR - dementiaDiagnostic and Statistical Manual III - Revised - dementia

AD Diagnosis:
DSM IIIR Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III-Revised
Hachinski's Ischemic Scale (Hachinski, 1975)
NINCDS ADRDA National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Diseases and Stroke/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association Criteria (McKhann 1984)

Total dementia definition: Dementia via DSM-III-R.

At baseline screening, subjects seen at home by psychologist and completed a questionnaire to collect...cognition and functional status. Intellectual functioning examined through "series of neuropsycholiogical tests sensitive for the detection and monitoring of cognitive decline in elderly individuals". At end of interview, psychologist filled in DSM III-R criteria for dementia. Next, a senior neurologist went to subject's home to confirm and complete DSM III-R criteria for dementia and applied NINCDS-ADRDA criteria and the Hachinski score to document dx of dementia and etiology, i.e. probable or possible AD, vascular, or other type.

Covariates & Analysis Detail
Analysis Type:
Cox proportional hazards regression

"Relative risks of incident dementia after 8 years of follow-up were estimated in multivariate analyses using a Cox model with delayed entry adjusted on multiple covariates".
