AlzRisk Paper Detail
Back

Reference: Ancelin, 2012
Cohort: Three-City Study
Risk Factor: Statin use

Average Follow-up Time Detail
Members of the cohort were followed for up to seven years. The article does not provide the average follow-up time for the female participants.

Exposure Detail
Interviewers ascertained exposure information by administrating a standardized questionnaire and by examining prescriptions and medications at baseline and at follow-up visits. The investigators reported results separately for male and female participants This entry pertains to results on the women.

The investigators compared AD risk in two groups: the group of male participants who used statins or fibrates at baseline ("Used") and the reference group of male participants who did not use statins or fibrates at baseline ("Did not use"). Within the entire study population of 7056 participants 16% reported using statins at their baseline evaluation, and another 13% reported using fibrates. The distribution of statin use status by sex was not reported.

Screening and Diagnosis Detail
Screening Method:
BVRTBenton Visual Retention Test (Benton 1974)
ISTIsaacs' Set Test (Isaacs & Kennie 1973)
MMSEMini-Mental State Examination (Folstein 1975)
Neuropsych Testing
Other
TMTTrail Making Test (Reitan 1958)

AD Diagnosis:
DSM IV Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV
NINCDS ADRDA National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Diseases and Stroke/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association Criteria (McKhann 1984)

Total dementia definition: Dementia via DSM-IV

"A three-step procedure was used to diagnose cases of dementia. First, screening was based on a thorough neuropsychological examination by trained psychologists (see above). Data on activities of daily living, severity of cognitive disorders, and, where possible, magnetic resonance images or computed tomography scans were collected. In addition, in Montpellier and Bordeaux all participants were examined by a neurologist. In Dijon only persons suspected of having a cognitive deficit on the basis of their neuropsychological performance underwent further examination by a specialist. Finally, in the 3 centers, all suspected dementia cases were analyzed by a committee of neurologists according to DSM-IV criteria. The committee reviewed all potential cases of dementia to obtain a consensus on its diagnosis and etiology based on all available information. Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed according to National Institutes of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association criteria. The onset of dementia was the date of the follow-up interview when dementia was diagnosed."
