Baseline venous blood samples were taken after an overnight
fast. Serum samples for folate measurements were sent to the biochemical laboratory for immediate immunoelectrochemiluminescence analysis. Intra- and interassay CVs were 3.1% and 3.8%, respectively.

"Dementia was defined on the basis of the clinical criteria of the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th
edition (24). AD was diagnosed on the basis of NINCDS-ADRDA (National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disease and Stroke–Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association) criteria for probable or possible AD [25]. Diagnoses were independently made by 2 physicians (PF and FM) on the basis of all available information. Finally, a diagnostic conference with a third senior physician (RG) was held to discuss each case."
